Sint Maarten / Saint Martin is the smallest island in the world shared by two sovereign nations β the Dutch Sint Maarten in the south and the French Saint Martin in the north. The border is completely open, marked only by a small monument, and crossing between French baguettes and Dutch Gouda, between French bistros and Dutch-Caribbean beach bars, is one of the Caribbean's most unique experiences.
The island is famous for Maho Beach β where commercial jets from Princess Juliana Airport pass so low overhead that passengers on the beach can reach up and touch the landing gear. It is one of the most photographed aviation spectacles on earth and a genuine adrenaline experience. But Sint Maarten offers far more than plane-watching β Orient Bay on the French side is one of the Caribbean's most beautiful and lively beaches, Philipsburg's boardwalk buzzes with cruise ship energy, and Marigot's French market sells the best cheese in the Caribbean.
The island was devastated by Hurricane Irma in 2017 but has rebuilt with remarkable resilience β and in many ways emerged more vibrant than before.
